Find yourself in Moruya

Experience Life.

Once you’ve dived out of that plane and taken a leap into a brand new world I bet you’re wondering what adventure you can go on next that could possibly top your skydiving experience – whether tandem or solo. The truth is your experience doesn’t stop or start with the plane, it starts when you first arrive to the beautiful town of Moruya (about 20 minutes drive south of Batemans Bay) and never stops. You will forever remember the feelings you experience here and take a piece with you, wherever you may go.

There are many things to see or do when you aren’t skydiving, so before or after your jump be sure to check out what the entire town can offer you! Take a stroll with no real destination and see where you wind up. After all it’s when you get lost that you find yourself. Just don’t get too upset at me when you start feeling homesick from this magical place when you’re sitting by the T.V in your living room.

We have the most beautiful beach and lucky you – you can enjoy it from an aerial perspective before landing right onto the warm sand! And it doesn’t stop there: bring a surf board and enjoy the waves, soak up the sun, enjoy a picnic, watch the sunset and meet new people. The friendly fishermen will be glancing at you as you float above them so I’m sure they’d be up for a chat about your experience afterwards.

If you’re a Jazz lover AND coming to Moruya in October, boy are you in for a treat. Every October a Jazz music festival is hosted with live music played throughout an array of venues across the town as well as a street parade! You’re sure to feel the soul and spirit of the town not only through the music but in the atmosphere.

Moruya is a shoppers’ dream with its eclectic mix of specialty shops, boutique fashion and jewellery outlets, antique and second hand stores. Enjoy a cooling ice cream to beat the heat as you scope out the Saturday morning markets and the sensational award winning SAGE Growers Market on Tuesday afternoons, both held at Riverside Park. If coffee keeps you going there are many quirky cafes to taste and if beer is more your cup of tea enjoy a cold one with your instructor at one of the local pubs – given he’s off duty of course.

And of course there is FLYING! Experience Moruya from 14,000ft and feel the air up here, see the town exactly how the birds do and fly with us. As a child how many times did you pretend to fly? How many dreams were dreamt about becoming a bird? Stop dreaming and start doing. At Skydive Oz we can make your dreams a reality. Bring the family and start the entire experience that is skydiving – after all, it never ends. With this many things to do I hope you leave the town feeling more wholesome and taking a piece of us with you. When you come to skydive with us the experience is on-going! Find yourself here, experience life at a level so carefree you can really just enjoy being yourself. Revel in the warm sand your feet sink into. Close your eyes and lose yourself in the music and wear that cute, bizarre ring you picked up from the antique shop with pride and smile as you reminisce your time here. Just don’t leave it too long before you decide to come back for your next jump – we’ll miss you too much! =]

Float above the world with a canopy course

So you can now solo skydive, but before you start diving into the world of free flying how about taking some time to have a closer look at the rectangular shaped material that hangs above your head and gets you safely to the ground. Learning how to fly your canopy – and fly it well – is just as important as pulling the pilot chute in the first place.

It gets you home safely, silly! Yes, you learnt the landing patterns during your AFF and you take the time before every jump to source out the direction the wind is coming from, but how well can you really fly your canopy? If you were to open fairly low and happened to land a fair distance from your holding area, are your skills honed enough to be able to make that pattern back to your planned landing or would you have to re-strategise your track? Canopy courses can provide you with the knowledge and confidence you need in this sport.

A canopy course is held here at Skydive Oz by our world renowned Jules McConnel. Jules has had thousands of jumps, which in turn means thousands of canopy rides that got her safely back home, so you’re in great hands. With many courses held throughout the year you can learn many different things. Once you master the basics during a series of in-flight exercises to show how inputs affect the canopy flight path you can then start looking at some canopy formation courses.

That’s entirely up to you! When you arrive you’ll discuss what skills you want to work on whether that be the focusing of consistent landings, harness turns or becoming a better swooper. These courses are for students, novices and instructors – you can never stop learning! You’ll provide your instructor with information on your canopy and your wing loading will be calculated (which will then turn into knowledge about how different canopies and different wing loadings can affect your flight).

Newbies, bet you’re already scratching your head at all these terms, but this is why we have these courses! In some courses Jules can be in radio contact with you after your hop ‘n’ pop and will be giving you some instructions as she plays with your canopy, creating burbles and disruptions whilst teaching you what’s happening, why and how to overcome the situation.

During these hop ‘n’ pops you can also play around with your openings and see how softly your canopy will flutter open at a sub terminal speed in comparison to a 6-second terminal speed opening. These soft openings will let you see the different cells opening and how it works. So openings are also something to discuss with your instructor should you attend.

Yes! Of course you can and Jules is a master of canopy formations. She brings some special CRW canopies that are available to hire for these events. Thorough dirt diving is carried out and video debriefing of every jump. Each event has a limited number of attendees so you know that you will have the ultimate experience with complete undivided focus from her that you need.

So, why not enjoy that view a little longer! Or create the view in an 8-way stack. A canopy course is definitely a good investment, the confidence it can provide you is unbelievable! Which is an important aspect one needs to have in this sport. Your attitude will affect your every jump so if you’re able to attain it, why not? And you’ll also have fun doing so.

Preparing for AFF

The ability to jump out of a plane may seem like a simple notion, but believe me do not underestimate this extreme sport. Before you jump take some time to prepare yourself mentally and ask yourself if you’re ready to achieve this goal. It’s super important to make sure that your heart is in this one, you will find love in the sky but only if you’re 100% committed.

Take some time to rummage through blogs, YouTube videos, ask friends or even visit a DZ and feel the vibe. Yes, of course we run you through a day of ground training but if you know what to expect it will help your understanding and hopefully the day will sink in and run a little smoother. Knowing your stages and preparing yourself for them in advance will give you a little extra boost of confidence. Which brings me to…

No, not your bra size! I’m talking about Dirt Diving. Run through your stage on the ground from entering the plane -> to exiting -> to the free fall itself then close your eyes and imagine that canopy ride down by studying your landing pattern. The more calm and confident you are on the ground, the more knowledge you will take with you to the sky.

I know you thought once you left school you’d never have to hear the word ‘study’ again but i guess you were wrong – STUDY the wind. Get to know it! The sky’s best friend is the wind and every man knows that all serious relationships secretly have the approval of a best friend (women, you know it’s true.) So when all is said and done we are not focusing on the sky here or the plane, we are focusing on the wind. The wind that can change your canopy course during the plane ride up, so have a backup plan! Know what to do for your landing if the wind becomes stronger or shifts direction. Be aware of where your DZ’s wind socks are and ask your instructors for help – that’s what we’re here for! We want you to find love here just as we have, so let us help you obtain it a little easier.

Don’t discourage yourself! what’s your rush? You’re living your dream, RIGHT NOW! You plucked up enough courage to get into that plane and jump out in the first place so if you do happen to find yourself stuck on an AFF stage don’t get discouraged or flustered about it. Dust yourself off and try again. Watch the video with your instructor and listen to what they have to say, and again I can’t stress enough on how important it is to ASK questions. Any question. The only stupid question is one not asked.

The secret is to just be calm – you’re only jumping out of an airplane. Relax, remember to breathe and practice all your stages on the ground before you jump. Educate yourself on all fields of the sport (Canopy/ Freefall/Landing/ Exits) to give you the confidence you need and always remember that you’re living your dream NOW. Your goal may be to achieve your licence but you are still living your dream from the moment you start to even think about it. I hope you chase dreams today, Carpe Diem.
