Get into free fly!

Get into free fly!

Hola little adrenalin junkies, I assume the title of this piece has captured your attention because you either don’t know about free flying or you’re about to start free flying – However, I might be completely wrong here and you could be a total boss. Either way, welcome! Below you will find some handy information that you may or may not already know about your adventure, we also have coaches on hand for when you’re in the sky and for the tunnel. AKA: Indoor skydiving Sydney. The sky is a big, big place filled with many things to learn and try. Are you ready for it?

What the heck is free flying?

For those that are still scratching their heads, free-flying is when you begin to move your body in a controlled manner- that is not in a belly to earth orientation. You are – as the name suggests – flying freely. You can see the power rangers do some freestyle free flying here (link).
though you may not be ready for the snowboard, the rest of the stuff is very much learn-able…

Skills

Before you start, you’ll need to have a B class license or above. If things are still a bit hectic for you in the sky try a few more jumps on your belly and pay close attention to how the wind is feeling on your body and what it is doing. Familiarize yourself with that before you decide to start moving your limbs around in foreign places.

Achieving your star crest is another good skill to have, if you don’t know what achieving your star crest means; keep your eyes peeled on this blog – I’ll be posting one soon.
PS: if you’re a little nervous and want to have a taster to see how you go take a visit the windy tube (iFly, indoor skydiving Sydney.) (link) Disclaimer: flyer is a pro at indoor skydiving Sydney.

I’m ready

Are you? Are you sure you’re ready to dive into the extreme awesomeness of dancing, tumbling and experimenting in the sky? I believe you. However, it’s a good idea to get a hold of a Free Fly coach with a certified Tudor rating. There’s also a progression table that they take you through that will, hopefully, make learning run smoother for you. Your coach will be able to sit and chat with you about your achievements as well as help you understand your struggles.

Oh! And you’ll need an audible altimeter; otherwise, there will be no flying in the ‘free’ sense for you. I also suggest getting your gear checked by your DZSO to make sure it’s free fly friendly. Most containers made nowadays are, but it’s always nice to have something checked by another set of- experienced- eyes that might pick up on something like replacing your hackey with a pud or fixing up a sloppy BOC that could potentially cause a preemie as your fall speed has increased.

Do such sky gods exist?

Of course! Watch some videos and educate yourself whilst finding a style of flying that inspires you. You may enjoy dynamic 4-ways or solo freestylers. Whatever your flavor, you will soon discover that you have your own unique style too but it’s always nice to aspire to something and try to replicate it for yourself. Check out my coach in all his freestyle glory here (link)
I hope this post has inspired you to try something new or be passionate about what you are already trying. If you decide to dive into free flying – pun intended – I hope you find the feeling of freedom in it and always remember that like everything else in skydiving, it is a learning process. Keep trying until you get it right! The only way to be really good at something is to remain passionate.

Passion is one great force that unleashes creativity, because if you’re passionate about something, then you’re more willing to take risks.
