Read this before Skydiving
Before we start, I assume you’re here to find out about the wonderful world of skydiving that awaits you! You probably have a million questions firing off in your mind:
- Where is Moruya? Where do you Skydive in Canberra?
- Are my instructors crazy for jumping out of perfectly good airplanes?
- What are the training procedures?
- How long does the Free fall last for?
Whoa there! Take a breather. Silence the questions buzzing around in your brain box and hear me out. Throughout a series of postings here on this very blog, I hope you find the answers you are searching for.
To start with, Moruya is located on the beautiful sunny south coast of NSW. It’s about 20 minutes drive from Batemans Bay. It’s a small yet friendly community, with plenty of things to do. So, when you’re not jumping you can head down to the beach for a surf or check out some local cafes and boutiques. The same team operates from Deakin Oval in Canberra City each weekend (Right next to the Royal Australian Mint!) enabling you to see Canberra from a fresh, exhilarating angle.
Are the instructors crazy or am I crazy, for WANTING to jump out of a perfectly good airplane?
Are we crazy? Crazy in LOVE! For most people, skydiving is just something they try once to tick off the bucket list, but for us, it’s a lifestyle. We live and breathe the sport; it’s changed our lives. The best part is the experience and learning never really stops. There are many branches that you can venture off into after a tandem! Should you decide to continue we have AFF courses (learn to skydive SOLO) CRW courses (Learn to fly your canopy and create picturesque formations in the sky!) keep checking back on our blog for frequent updates.
What you should know before training and the experience.
After you complete a booking and the glorious morning of your human flight experience arrives you’ll check in with our friendly staff at the front desk to fiddle around with some paperwork etc. Here is when your heart will begin to beat a little faster; the euphoric feeling of adrenaline is soaring hot through your veins! You enter the hangar where our instructor greets you, you feel like a mental case with so many emotions running through your body at once: Excitement, nervousness, happiness, you may even be a little tense. My advice? Do like Taylor Swift and ‘Shake it off’. Don’t stress! You’re in great hands.
You’ll step into the harness that will later be attached to your tandem instructor, but not before they tighten it around your body making sure you’re all snug and secure. Ready to get in the plane? Of course, you are! This is what you’re here for. You step up and crawl to the back of the plane, you gaze out the window as the plane lifts up off the ground and higher into the sky. Your instructor taps you on the shoulder; you turn and see him pointing to his altimeter. Your eyes widen as the dial continues to increase, 8,000ft, 10,000ft, 14,000ft – The pilot calls “2 minutes.” and your instructor calmly makes the final adjustments needed before you have the best experience of your life. You take this moment to close your eyes and feel the vibe, to feel how your body is reacting to the situation. You notice your body is no longer tense. You’re excited! Confident.
You open your eyes and exhale taking a final look out the window; the sun is hitting the ocean perfectly sending ripples of light that look like diamonds to your eyes. Your instructor says it’s time to jump. So, off you go…time to conquer the world!
The Free Fall
Contradictory to what Point Break may imply, my little adrenaline junkie, the free fall does not last 5 minutes. However, you will experience the most exhilarating 60-second free fall of your life, you’ll always remember. It will make you feel exactly as its name suggests: Feeling free. Followed by a beautiful and serene parachute glide before touching down on the most gorgeous beach that Moruya offers. Our instructors are highly trained professionals with thousands of jumps under their belts, so you can just sit back and soak up that glorious view while they do all the work!
I hope you have found some answers you have been searching for. Nevertheless, the fact that you are here and still reading tells me one thing, you’re curious. Curious about the feeling of being free, curious about the feeling of being able to fly! And that is something that mere words cannot express and that feeling of want for freedom cannot be filled by any other experience on this planet. You’re just going to have to try it and when you land with a grin that shines ear to ear you will whisper to yourself “She was right.”
**Food for thought**
Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return. (Leonardo Di Vinci)
Hope to see you in the skies,
